ADMISSIONS PROCESS

PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT  (Ages 16-30)

The desire of the Government to improve accessibility to basic health care of all Ghanaians in the early 1960's, led to the training of Medical Assistants.  This was occasioned by the shortage and misdistribution of physicians. Further development of the health care delivery based on the Primary Health Care approach, has emphasized the need to train multi – purpose mid level health professionals to deal with common diseases that constitute a big percentage the diseases afflicting most Ghanaians. This curriculum is competency- based, and takes into consideration the current needs of society and those of the students.  In this regard, greater emphasis is being laid on the community, physical and social sciences as well as spiritual and ethical elements in medical practice.

The supervised field attachment is to be carried out wholly in the community with students involved in a direct observation as well as participation in the activities of a community health worker. The courses are organized so as to encourage the integration of theory and practice.  Teachers are encouraged to use the community as part of training environment.  As much as possible the problem based approach will require students to identify problems and plan interventions to solve them is encouraged. The curriculum is arranged to cover: the philosophy, goals and objectives of the programme, entry requirements, grading system and the course structure. It also includes a list of suggested text books for each course Assessment of students' learning in each course will be done through continuous assessment and end of semester examinations.

TECHNICAL OFFICER  (CMH)  (Ages 16-30)

COMMUNITY HEALTH – NUTRITION

Basic health care for all Ghanaians has been a top priority by the Government of Ghana. This has led to the introduction of a health care system that will meet this objective. Development of the health care system brought the Primary Health Care concept, which emphasized the need to train less sophisticated health workers, including Nutritionists, to contribute to the attainment of good health by the Ghanaian populace.

The rational of the programme is to produce a qualified Nutritionist who will contribute in diverse ways towards better nutritional and health status of all Ghanaians. His/her work will be wide in scope, efficient in its operation, simple in its approach and yet cost effective in its delivery.

HEALTH INFORMATION  (Ages 16-30)

The thrust of the Medium Term Health Strategy is on quality care and efficiency. Also the decentralization of the Ministries, Departments and agencies as well as local governance, requires that decision –making takes place at all levels of the sectors. Managers therefore require adequate information for making informed decisions. This means that relevant data must be collected, analysed and used at these levels. This expectation poses a challenge to data managers and medical record officers especially in the health sector at the district level.

The task of collecting, analyzing and interpreting data for decision-making falls in the domain of biostatistics staff at the various health facilities and units of the Ministry of Health. The current training of the existing staff is too basic in content focusing mainly on aspects of medical records keeping. This limitation does not enable the collection, analysis and interpretation of data in the broad context of health service delivery and management

Microcomputers are being introduced into the Health and other Sectors at various levels and are now being seen as essential tools for effective work performance. However, the impact of the technology in the Ministries and Departments is yet to be harnessed. Despite the increasing number of computers in the sectors, there has been very little impact on the quality of information generated. This is mainly because the staff lacks the skills and confidence to exploit the new technology, to analyse and solve information problems. This can only be achieved if key personnel are trained in the latest techniques to enable them exploit the full potentials of the technology.

To meet the requirements of contemporary management environment, there is the need for improvement in capacity building towards health management information system, data collection, analysis, interpretation, dissemination, decision-making and action, storage and retrieval of information.
